A Geo-ball is a spherical shape whose design is borrowed from geodesic domes. Triangles are an important shape in structures, as they provide great strength. In building structures, students gain experience in spatial visualization, a valuable skill in science and math.
The following science craft fits into the following clusters:
K: Paper
Gr. 1: Characteristics of Objects and Materials
Gr. 3: Materials & Structures
Gr. 7: Forces & Structures
Steps:
1. Cut 10 circles (You may want to make
them larger for smaller children)
from construction paper, old calendars,
old cards,… (recycling activity!)
2. Cut one triangle from heavier paper or
cardboard,for a pattern.
3. Centre the triangle inside each circle.
Fold the circle along the lines of the
triangle template. Repeat with the
remaining 19 circles.
4. Align the folded sections of two
circles together. Staple or glue them.
Hold them together with a paper clip,
as the glue dries.
5. Add 3 more circles to create a rosette
of 5 circles. Repeat with remaining 5
circles. They look like little
igloos/domes. Keep the folded sections
to the outside.
6. Glue the two halves of 5 circles each,
together.
7. Tie a string through one of the folded
Sections and hang with string.
