Small, delicate net molds, strung with ribbons or yarn, can be used for Christmans tree decorations.
At Easter, using pastel colored yarn and small, oval-shaped balloons, you can create eggs for hanging or eggs for arrangement in a bowl or basket for use as a centerpiece. For a spring decoration, use brown twine and cover half of a round balloon, making a small twine nest. Fill the nest with tiny robin's eggs, little silk flowers or a feathercraft bird.
In autumn, fill your nest with colored leaves, nuts, or little plastic mushrooms. Hang multicolored balls of color in a sunny window all year 'round.
Since the wet yarn and balloons are slippery to handle, this project is recommended for older children with a bit more patience and dexterity than the younger ones have. Working in pairs would be helpful.
Materials:
Small balloons
Petroleum jelly
Yarn or string (Choose color(s) appropriate to your project.)
LINIT® Starch OR LINIT® Starch-n-Crafts™ Stiffener in a bowl
Wax paper
Process:
Blow up the balloons to the desired size and knot the ends.
Coat the inflated balloon with a thin layer of petroleum jelly.
Cut the yarn into long pieces (approximately 2-3 ft.) and dip them into starch.
Starting at the knotted and, begin wrapping the starch-soaked yarn around the balloon at various angles. Remember that the idea is to create a net, so don't leave any big gaps.
Set the balloon on wax paper to dry.
When the yarn is completely dry (several hours or overnight) carefully pop the balloon and remove it.
