Decorative Denim Backpacks

Summer is coming to an end, but that doesn't mean that all the fun has to stop. Kids can get their creative juices flowing just in time for the new school year by decorating the backpacks that will hold all their back-to-school essentials.

Decorative Denim Backpacks

Materials:

  • Denim backpack, child-size
  • Acrylic paints:
    • Fabric: White, Black
    • Flourescent: Pink, Orange, Yellow, Electric Blue, Green, Red
  • Scrubber paintbrush
  • Fine-liner paint tip
  • Air-soluble marker

Instructions:

Note: Use photo as placement and painting guide throughout.

Using air-soluble marker draw shapes and pictures (sun, flowers, swirls, hearts, etc.) onto front pocket of backpack. For border, draw wiggles and stars around sides and top of backpack. Draw child's initials on upper front center panel of backpack.

Use White to basecoat all shapes and add 1/4" dots randomly around shapes. (Note: Begin painting shapes with colors before basecoat dries completely.)

Paint stars and center of sun Flourescent Yellow; hearts Flourescent Pink; swirls and second initial Flourescent Green; large sun rays, flower centers, random dots around stars and wiggles, third initial, and shading around stars and center of sun Flourescent Orange; small sun rays, shading around flower centers, and first initial Flourescent Red; dots around shapes Electric Blue.

Mix equal parts Flourescent Pink and Electric Blue to make purple. Paint flowers and wiggles purple.

Following manufacturer's instructions, use fine liner and Black paint to outline all shapes and draw face on sun.
